Locals came out in force on Tuesday morning to meet the man widely regarded as the driving force behind the practise of Tai Chi for health and wellbeing.
Dr Paul Lam, the Founder & Director of the Tai Chi for Health Institute co-hosted Council’s free Tai Chi for Health class alongside local instructor, Yoshi Ochiai.
The Douglas Tai Chi faithful were joined by many new faces as Rex Smeal park was transformed into a set of synchronised bodies.
Following the class, Dr Lam delighted participants with a Tai Chi routine as graceful as it was powerful.
Before Tuesday’s class Dr Lam took a moment to share his insights into why Tai Chi is such an important practise for health and wellbeing. Watch the video below.
Tai Chi for health has quickly become one of the flagship fitness classes in Council’s Active8 Free Fitness program, with solid attendance and ever growing interest.
“We’re thrilled so many people have become captivated by the practise of Tai Chi,” said Renee Ker, Council’s Sport & Recreation Development Officer
“Tai Chi is incredibly beneficial for mental health, illness and injury recovery, and general wellbeing. The class is growing in popularity as more and more people cave into curiosity and try it out,” she said.
“We have such a great representation of ages and abilities at our Tai Chi for Health classes and its great to see the practise captures such a diverse audience. It’s fantastic that Council can host this free fitness opportunity for the community, from Port Douglas to the Daintree.”
Given the popularity of the classes, funding has been secured to extend the Diwan class at Alexander Bay Sports Club to run every Thursday until June 24.
