New 36-room motel & bar approved

A NEW motel with a ground floor reception that doubles as a café and bar could be coming to a popular street in Port Douglas.

Douglas Shire Council has approved a development application for a 36-room motel with a café/bar at 20 Warner Street.

The development seeks to cater for a modern traveller with three upper levels each comprising of 12 studio units. The building will feature vertical landscaping.

Each residential level includes a recreational area with adjacent landscaped, light wells.

The development will provide 17 car parking spaces and additional on-street parking and loading facilities will be constructed on the adjacent street area.

Beachfront residential development in Port Douglas

A vacant block of land once used by a popular Port Douglas resort has been earmarked for future residential development.

Douglas Shire Council has issued a development permit for the reconfiguration of a lot at the corner of Langley Road and Andrew Close.

The application proposes the development of 15 residential lots and a new road.

Four large lots, each being 1,000m2 or greater, will front Solander Boulevard.

The land was once developed as Whispering Palms Resort, which was popular in the 70s and 80s, before it was demolished in 2003.

Budget surplus in sights

DOUGLAS Shire Council remains on track to achieve a budget surplus after adopting the revised 2019-20 Annual Budget.

The revised financials project a revised operating result of $86,915 by the end of financial year.

Key changes adopted in the revised budget include an increase in operating revenue and expenditure, adjustments to existing capital expenditure, new capital projects and revised figures from the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

Murphy St landslip repair tender awarded

Douglas Shire Council has awarded the $2.6 million tender to repair the landslip on Murphy Street and upgrade the street to GEO Design Pty Ltd.

The contractor will repair slope instabilities and upgrade street infrastructure.

The landslip damage occurred during flooding in March 2018.

Council has engaged the directly affected residents of Murphy Street with regular written updates and held a community session where a proposed design was presented.

Tropical dress code for Citizenship ceremonies

Douglas Shire Council has adopted the dress code that conferees and their guests should be dressed in smart casual clothing befitting our tropical environment.

Council conducts three citizenship ceremonies annually to allow conferees to make the Australian citizenship pledge.
