GRAB your stick, puck, and snorkel? That’s right! Hockey is better when it’s wetter, the Mossman Pool is putting an underwater twist on the classic game of hockey, and you can come to try the cool innovative sport for FREE.

The Cairns Underwater Hockey Association is inviting the community to a “Come & Try” event at the Mossman Pool from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday 28 October.

Underwater hockey is suitable for people from all walks of life and fitness abilities, it’s a non-contact community sport with men and women competing against each other on an equal basis.

Cairns Underwater Hockey Association Development Officer, Sean Hartley, said underwater hockey cannot be imagined until you try it.

“The three-dimensional nature of the sport releases you from the confines of gravity and allows you to achieve body positions not even seen in yoga,” he said.

“It literally is the best sport that you have never heard of. Mossman has a long history of producing great underwater hockey players and with all the recent refurb work done to the Mossman pool we would like to see if we can get it going again.”

If you never heard of underwater hockey, think of it as the love child sport between water polo and hockey, it is very much a thing played around the world and is incredibly exciting and invigorating.

Swimmers wearing snorkels gripping short sticks dive to the bottom of the pool battling for control of a puck. Having to frequently come up for air makes this a game centred on strategy and teamwork. Add on the fact that there are no goalies to protect the net, and you’ve got a sport that requires highly coordinated team play.

It’s fast, furious, and a lot of fun.

The sport, which has been in the Douglas Shire before will re-launch at the new-look Mossman Pool with the hopes to gain momentum to start regular competitions. And as the temperature rises it’s the ideal way to keep active in the tropics.

“It is breathtaking in its simplicity and is simply the best form of exercise for the far northern climate – you can work as hard as you want and still not work up a sweat,” said Mr Hartley.

If you are looking to keep fit with a bit of sweat-free heart-pumping exercise while trying something different and fun, then make waves with underwater hockey at the Mossman Pool.
