TWO events have been included in the Port Douglas Carnivale line up  – Dogs’ Day Out and a Gala Luncheon – which are special fundraisers to help build a new Paws and Claws animal shelter in Port Douglas.

The Dogs’ Day Out is a mega party in the park for dogs and their owners.

There are prizes for the cutest, ugliest and naughtiest dog, best dog trick and best dressed and best groomed dog and of course, the dog with the “waggiest” tail.

The owner-dog lookalike competition will see who matches their canine friend the most, the best dog trick will be chosen and one perfect pooch will be named the Douglas Top Dog. The event will include games for pets and people plus stalls, treats and entertainment.

The Paws and Claws Gala Luncheon will be held at Zinc Restaurant with guests treated to a sumptuous three-course meal, with entertainment by Melbourne band Sour Grapes and Wonderland Spiegeltent performers.

Raffles and special prizes will add to the atmosphere. The long, languid lunch will kick off with bubbles on arrival.

The Gala Luncheon and Dogs Day Out will help finance the new purpose-designed shelter for homeless and abandoned animals in Craiglie on the outskirts of Port Douglas.

It is due to open later this year and will house 38 dogs plus other animals in a fully enclosed and sound proof building. The animal shelter is expected to cost around $350,000.

Dogs’ Day Out is on Saturday May 22 at Jalunbu Park from 10am to 1pm. The Gala Luncheon will be held on Sunday May 16 at Zinc from 12 noon to 4pm with tickets $99 plus booking fee available online at www.carnivale.com.au
