LOCAL businesses owners and workers are invited to attend a Mental Health Awareness Program in Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation this month.

Douglas Shire Council and Tourism Port Douglas Daintree (TPDD) is collaborating to deliver the workshops, which are designed to help and support the business sector in response to possible psychological challenges of COVID-19.

The workshops will be delivered by workplace mental health professionals – Thrive At Work.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the sessions would create awareness about mental health and provide tangible tips to creating a healthy workplace.

“Our businesses in Douglas Shire are renowned for their resilience and ability to adapt when challenges arise,” he said.

“We are providing an opportunity for those business owners and workers who may have had a tough time through COVID to sit down with experts and get advice on ensuring a thriving workplace as we start to welcome more visitors to our region.

“We are hearing that many accommodation businesses are getting more and more bookings each day, particularly with Easter around the corner, and a sense of optimism is growing.”

The workshops will be held from 9am to 4pm on Thursday 18 March in Port Douglas and Tuesday 23 March in Cape Tribulation.

What do the sessions entail?

Part One – 4 HOURS

Focussing on Awareness – destigmatising and building genuine awareness around mental health on a personal level.

  • Recognise poor mental health
  • What are the causes
  • How to help someone experiencing poor mental health
  • Where to get professional assistance

Part Two –  2 HOURS

Provide Business owners with a workshop and take away tool kit to better address psychological risk within the workplace. Why is this important? – Having a check list of resources on hand and understanding how poor mental health can impact a workplace is vital to creating healthy businesses. Tool kits work towards moving nebulous concepts of mental health towards actionable items within organisations.
